Allison Fagundes’ curiosity that would spark her career path began after she learned to sew at the age of nine. With a truly exceptional seamstress as her teacher (and grandma!), she began to wonder how one takes a sketch of a design and produces a pattern. At that moment, the path to design school was set and the big city of Los Angeles was in her future. Allison attended FIDM’s Los Angeles campus and finished the Fashion Design, A.A. program. During her time there, she interned for Los Angles based designer, Kevan Hall. Under the supervision of his Head of Production, Allan Crowder, Allison learned the ins-and-outs of manufacturing and sourcing in Los Angeles. While at FIDM, Allison became interested in Art History. This prompted her decision to transfer to Loyola Marymount University and finish her undergrad majoring in Art History, with a minor in Business Administration. During her time at LMU, Allison landed into a Costume Design career in the independent film industry for a total of five years.
Allison returned to manufacturing when hired at LeNique, an LA based designer dancewear company that is known for producing beautifully adorned garments for reality dance TV shows like So You Think You Can Dance, Dance Your Ass Off, and Dancing with the Stars. At LeNique, she managed manufacturing and sourcing for men’s and women’s clothing, women’s consultations and sales, design management, and maintaining Before beginning at LeNique, Allison began to develop the concept for Bustees, which originated from a rather humiliating and emotional moment… that is now hilarious.
During her excursion to the Venice Beach Boardwalk, Allison finally found what she was looking for: a t-shirt of The Doors. She took it home and threw it on while standing in front of her bathroom mirror then immediately burst into tears.
Well, Jim Morrison’s handsome, round face stretched across her boobs and looked more like Stewie Griffin’s football-shaped head. Also, the graphics stretched to the point of tearing. With that being the last straw that broke the bra-strap, Bustees was born.
